United States Project Notice - US 101 - Indian Creek - Remove Fish Barrier

Project Notice

PNR 45000
Project Name US 101 - Indian Creek - Remove Fish Barrier
Project Detail Just west of Herrick Road and the Elwha River in Clallam County lays Indian Creek. A tributary to the Elwha River for salmon and other migratory species, the creek has been identified by biologists as a barrier to fish passage. In its current configuration, field reviews suggest the culvert under US 101 at this location is only 30 percent passable. Beginning in summer, crews will replace the existing culvert at Indian Creek with a 180-foot-long concrete girder bridge. Once complete, the work in the channel will simulate what is found in a natural stream bed and improve fish passage. This project will open nearly 11 miles in potential habitat gain for migratory species. Why we remove fish passage barriers State highways cross streams and rivers in thousands of places in Washington State, which can impede fish migration. WSDOT has worked for nearly three decades to improve fish passage and reconnect streams to help keep waterways healthy. WSDOT Fish Barrier Correction is a priority. Elwha River This project builds upon WSDOT’s commitment to replacing the 1926 US 101 Elwha River Bridge. Indian Creek is a tributary to the Elwha River and will benefit fish who travel and spawn through the area. What travelers can expect Crews will work closely with the contractor to minimize the inconvenience to neighbors and travelers. Lane closures, delays and construction noise should be expected as work occurs each weekday during daylight hours. Travelers are encouraged to sign up for email alerts and download the WSDOT mobile app for upcoming and real-time information.
