Last paved in 2010, several sections along this 20-mile stretch of US 97 between Centerville Road at milepost 7.0 and Ski Lodge Road at milepost 27.0, in Klickitat County, are nearing the end of their useful life and in need of repair. Beginning in summer 2021, contractor crews will begin work to repair the roadway by sealing cracks, smoothing ruts and filling potholes, creating a smoother, safer driving surface for all users of the highway. Crews will also be paving sections along Scale House Road and along E. Simcoe Drive.
Construction
What should travelers expect during construction?
Once construction begins, travelers should expect weekday, daytime single lane closures with flaggers and a pilot car leading travelers through the work zone. Travelers should plan for delays of up to 20 minutes. Bicyclists will be transported through the work zone when work crews are present. Any extended highway closures will be announced in advance.
Doing this work will improve the structural integrity of the highway and extends the useful life of the road.
Safety: Improving the highway surface eliminates and helps prevent future potholes. Fresh pavement removes cracks and wheel ruts where water can collect. This gives drivers an improved ride especially when driving in the rain.
Economic/Preservation: Repaving preserves the highway structure and reduces the potential for costly emergency repairs and closures.
Reduced Speeds
As with any highway construction project, travelers must exercise caution. Traveling at slower speeds decreases the chance of workzone crashes and helps to keep travelers and highway work crews safe.
It takes time and patience
Please be patient when traveling in work zones. Traveling at the posted construction speed limits in construction zones will ensure your safety and the safety of highway workers.
Its also the law. Traffic fines are doubled in construction zones. Obeying warning signs and flagging personnel instructions benefits all those who share the roadway with you, too.
