Project Rationale and Linkage to Country/Regional Strategy Around 44.5% of agricultural GDP is generated from livestock. The sector has experienced steady growth in recent years in both animal numbers and production. Compared with 2011, by January 2018 cattle numbers had increased by 8.3%, horses by 28.7%, sheep by 1.5%, and poultry by 8.3%. Despite increasing outputs, Kazakhstan remains a net importer of meat and milk. Livestock numbers are projected to continue to increase over the period 2019 2022, reflecting the governments aim of increased national self-sufficiency. Women and men are evenly represented in agriculture, however, the number of women employed in agriculture has declined by 34% between 2006 and 2016. The government regards improving the populations access to livestock products as a means of improving standards of human nutrition and food security. |
