Project Name PRESERVING ISLAND ECOSYSTEMS AND MAKING THEM LESS VULNERABLE TO CLIMATE CHANGE
Project Detail The RESCCUE Regional Project (Restoration of Ecosystem Services and Adaptation to Climate Change), in operational phase since early 2015, supports PICTs in the implementation of integrated coastal zone management, with pilot sites in Fiji , New Caledonia, French Polynesia and Vanuatu. The implementation of this project is done by SPC. The aim is to maintain and improve the functionality of ecosystems, to demonstrate their economic value and to set up innovative financing mechanisms to ensure the sustainability of preservation actions (for example via payments for environmental services). Each pilot site develops activities related to its ecosystem: hunting and fighting against invasive species, pearl farming and sustainable fisheries, reforestation and mangrove planting, sustainable tourism, etc.). Initially funded for 4 million euros, the RESCCUE project benefited in 2017 from 4.5 million additional euros to sustain and strengthen the actions implemented. IMPACTS The RESCCUE project: participates in the preservation of Pacific coastal ecosystems; promotes the maintenance and boosting of economic activities dependent on biodiversity (fishing, tourism, agriculture, etc.); builds resilience to climate change; contributes to the integration of ecosystem services values ??into coastal zone management policies.
