Project Name Support to the Development of Cultural Tourism
Project Detail UNDP is currently implementing an EU funded national programme for Supporting Culture Tourism Development in the occupied Palestinian territory. The overall objective of the programme is to contribute to national economic growth through developing the Palestinian tourism sector by revitalizing cultural infrastructure and increasing Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs). The Programme will be implemented in full partnership and cooperation with the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities (MoTA), Palestinian Islamic Waqf, Jericho Governorate, Jericho Committee for Tourism Development, Municipality of Nablus and the private owners of the sites. The programme will Contribute towards conserving and protecting cultural infrastructure Improve the potential for cultural, eco-tourism and creative industries for an inclusive economic growth Contribute towards raising awareness of the local communities about the importance of cultural heritage Provide job opportunities mainly for young professionals and women (craftsmanship, tourism and cultural management), and improved engagement with the local private sector Increase the number of tourists and visitors to the occupied Palestinian territory in addition to adding new touristic routes with the new concept of connecting the landscape with the environmental, archaeological sites and historical buildings Increase the income for local communities by providing access to tourists and, hence, new economic opportunities. The programme includes the following key activities: Revitalization of the Khan Al Wakale complex in Nablus and transforming it into a fully operational touristic attraction/site for both local and international tourists Revitalization of the Maqam Nabi Musa in Jericho through the establishment of a guest house and tourist centre for both religious and mainstream tourism Develop and institutionalize a model for public-private partnership engagement for the management of cultural heritage and touristic sites
