Natac Biotech S.L. is the R&D division of a group of 8 companies (Natac Group S.L.) with headquarters in Spain and international presence in EU, LATAM and the USA. Our group is a leading firm of the natural extracts sector and we have developed and operated the first olive biorefinery at a global level. Thanks to this, we can obtain high added value bioactive ingredients from residues of olive oil production (circular bio-economy) at industrial quantities and very competitive prices. In our effort to continue innovating and expanding, the AQUOLIVE project is now the most strategic project for us, as a way to become a leading player of the animal nutrition market. The AQUOLIVE project is aimed at offering the aquaculture sector a high-performance feed additive based on our patented formulation of bioactive phytochemicals obtained from olive oil production by-products (production method also patented). This solution will help Fish farmers to increase their productivity and profitability, while reducing the use of hazardous antimicrobial chemicals in intensive aquaculture practices. Thanks to the clear benefits AQUOLIVE will bring to fish farmers and the industry need for this type of solution, we see in the AQUOLIVE project a clear investment opportunity, in which we seek entering the fast-growing aquaculture feed market. This market was value globally at €156 Billion in 2015 and project to €209 Billion by 2019. More precisely, AQUOLIVE will target the salmon feed market, with a global production of 7 MTon in 2017 and that accounts for a total of 11% share of the total production of aquafeed products globally. In this growing market scenario, our 3-years business plan after this Phase 2 project will mean a 3-years cumulative cash flow of €9.02 Million meaning a 3-years after-tax ROI of 362% for a total investment of €2.49 Million in the Phase 2 project (€1.74 M of EU contribution).

The EU is the undisputed worldwide referent in the olive oil sector, responsible for 70% of the worldwide production. To face the global competition, olive oil produced in the EU must be a distinguished product by its premium quality and competitive price. Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) demand is increasing due to new consumers concerns (healthy, ecologic food) and the incorporation of new, high-income countries (US, Australia, China, etc.). To reach the highest quality oil, only top quality olives should be used. But frequently defective or unwanted olives enter the oil mill. These are frozen, dehydrated, over-mature, insect damaged or ground-picked olives, to name some, which will lead to downgrading the oil quality, i.e. organoleptic and chemical parameters (free acidity, esters, aldehydes, alcohols, ketones, etc.) being affected negatively. Market price will also be lowered. Olive sorting by quality and/or maturity at the reception area in the mill is becoming a need in a sector which is shifting towards intense cultivation, mechanical harvesting and large capacity plants with enhanced technological means. As of today there are no focused solutions in the market. Leveraging on her success in the Table Olives sector, Multiscan will address the next technical challenge impacting olive oil, a huge market valued at 6,000 M€, by developing equipment specifically tailored for the sorting of incoming olives. Through state-of-the-art vision technology, the Multiscan EVOOLUTION will ensure that defective and unwanted olives are removed from entering the mill, consistently obtaining higher quality EVOO. End-user trials in oil mills from both hemispheres will assure the perfect matching of EVOOLUTION to the needs of all oil producers. By 2024, we will put in the market close to 300 EVOOLUTION units, resulting in accumulated net profits of 17 M€ and the direct creation of 20 new job positions in our company.

Food Integrity “the state of being whole, entire, or undiminished or in perfect condition”. Providing assurance to consumers and other stakeholders about the safety, authenticity and quality of European food (integrity) is of prime importance in adding value to the European Agri-food economy. The integrity of European foods is under constant threat from fraudulently labelled imitations that try to exploit that added value. The FOODINTEGRITY project will directly address this issue and will be an international focal point for harmonisation and exploitation of research and technology for insuring the integrity of European food. Comprising an inner core of project participants from industry, academia, research institutes, technology providers and a global network of stakeholders, FOODINTEGRITY will rationalise and harmonise capability to provide a coherent structure and process for assuring the food supply. FOODINTEGRITY will: facilitate the sharing of information between stakeholder groups regarding European food integrity; establish processes for harmonising & exploiting existing databases; establish fit for purpose methodology to address stakeholder needs; identify and address research gaps by procuring and delivering €3M of commissioned projects; establish a self-sustaining Food-fraud early warning system for identifying emerging fraud risks; establish a self-sustaining worldwide network of stakeholders to ensure maximum uptake of the project legacy. Improved verification procedures will be developed for food control and industry stakeholders using 3 key commodities as exemplars: olive oil, spirit drinks & seafood. In addition a consumer study in China will assess their consumer attitudes in the face of substantial counterfeiting of European food. Finally it will establish expert food authenticity platforms that will supply independent expert opinion on food authenticity/food fraud to the European Commission, Codex and other national/international bodies

The CreamOlive project addresses the global need of healthy and high-quality production of bakery food, by introThe CreamOlive project addresses the global need of healthy and high-quality production of bakery food, by introducing the first all-natural fat based on olive oil which is solid at room temperature, thus making it suitable to large industrial processes. This allows producing food with up to 60% lower saturated fat content, capturing the growing “palm oil free” and “free from” trend in the food industry. Palm oil is the most used fat in food production thanks to its very low cost, high availability, and adaptability to industrial processes. Recently, health and environmental concerns are turning palm oil into an unpopular choice amongst consumers. Several food producers who started to go “palm oil free”, adopting alternatives as butter, margarines, or melanges, which often present drawbacks (high saturated fat content, raw material low availability, high cost, etc.). Industrial producers need to diversify their offer with a viable trade-off between industrial needs (cost and adaptability), quality (palatability, crispness, taste), and healthiness (low fat and good-for-you features). Thanks to its patent-pending mechanical process, Mida+ managed to produce a solid formulation with 80% of extra virgin olive oil as fat component. Saturated fats are 60% lower than in palm oil, without using the controversial mono and diglycerides, additives used in most of the margarines which may contains trans-fat acids. CreamOlive has excellent organoleptic features and shelf-life equivalent to palm oil. Furthermore, the unmatched plasticity of the product makes the food product lift with 20% less fat than other competitors, thus increasing its price competitiveness. The Phase 1 project aims at the validation of the CreamOlive value proposition with customers, which will allow fine-tuning the pricing strategy, the business model, and the European commercialisation strategy.

Olive oil production is of strategic importance for most economies around the Mediterranean. One of the main pests threatening olive cultivation is the olive fly. Related insects as the Mediterranean fruit fly and the invasive fly Drosophila suzukii are mayor problems in fruti- and viticulture. Given increasing limitations to the use of chemical insecticides, innovative biological control agents and IPM strategies for these pests are highly solicited. The applicant has previously established PCR tools for the specific identification of three bacterial insect pathogens that have recently been found associated with the olive fly. During his solicited research stay at CNR-IPSP Portici and planned secondments and short stays, these tools will be employed to explore olive fly populations across Southern Italy for new potential biocontrol resources. Targeted identification will be complemented by novelty-open exploration of olive fly microbiomes. The biocontrol potential of identified bacteria will be evaluated, and transposon mutagenesis together with PTR-MS and FISH will be used to identify virulence factors as toxins or chemical attractants. This research agenda can only be implemented in a cooperation of the applicant with an infrastructurally well established partner in a Mediterranean country as CNR-IPSP. It is the scientific-technical objective of the action to develop innovative biocontrol or IPM concepts based on the experimental results obtained. It is the strategic objective of the action: i) to identify new biocontrol strains not subject to property rights of third parties, ii) to create a regional network of biocontrol researchers, bio-insecticide producing SMEs, and olive cultivators to facilitate subsequent product development for a regional market, and iii) to increase public visibility of the action and social acceptance for alternative, not only more ecosystem-friendly and sustainable, but also economically successful plant protection strategies.

The EcoPROLIVE project proposes an innovative processing for the full exploitation of high valuable constituents in the olive into novel products that are healthy and greener. The proposed process is very different from the current approaches of olive oil industrial production, and waste revalorization alternatives, as it follows a “zero waste” approach and all resulting products have commercial value. Part of the process is based on the patent WO2013030426 with further developments for quality and environmental improvements, such as the use of supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) with CO2 instead of n-hexane extraction, and including pulsed electric field (PEF) technology to improve the drying performance and the oil extraction yields. EcoPROLIVE project goals are: demonstration of the technical and economical feasibility of the processing and its environmental study; ensuring the market uptake of the technology and novel products, fully characterized (nutritional, functional, toxicological) to avoid market barriers; design of the optimal process, and scale-up from lab/pilot plant to preindustrial application (TRL6); validation at an operational environment (TRL7); monetizing the technology and developed process (patents) into scalable markets and replication in different scales and countries, starting with the main olive oil producers represented in the consortium (Spain, Italy, Greece, Portugal). Replication is expected in a total of 504 olive oil mills, that will deliver 37,000 tn olive oil, 3,700 tn functional oil (hydroxytyrosol, tyrosol, oleocanthal, oleuropein, others), and 44,400 tn phenol-rich fibre ingredient with intended use in bakery products (biscuit, bread). The global estimated profit is high (63 Mll€) as well as the environmental benefit associated to waste reduction (126,100 tn waste water). Conclusively EcoPROLIVE processing is presented as an economically and environmentally sustainable innovation that will promote the sector competitiveness.

Pulsed electric field technology (PEF) represents an innovative solution for sustainable processing in order to improve the competitiveness of the European food industry. Currently, in spite of the many advantages deriving from the introduction of the PEF technology in the food industry and the existence of different PEF manufactures at industrial-scale, applications of PEF in the food industry is still limited. FieldFOOD project is based on a preliminary analysis addressed to identify the bottlenecks that cause such limited application with the objective of providing SME companies (food producers, pulse power producers, equipment manufactures) with a clear competitive edge, as well as opportunities for growing, diversification and job creation but also of responding to consumer demand for foods with fresh characteristics or novel foods that contribute to individual health and wellbeing. This broad objective will be achieved by: a) a systematic process analysis of different specific applications (fruit juice processing, tomato product processing, winemaking, olive oil extraction and cider-making) for a successful integration of the PEF technology in order to replace or complement existing traditional food processing technologies and b) the design of modular, portable, low-cost pulse generators. The main deliverable of FieldFOOD project will be to validate and demonstrate, in co-operation with SMEs, implementation of modular, portable, low-cost pulse generators for different applications. The efforts needed to introduce this technology in the food industry for different applications are necessary to be multidisciplinary. Therefore, to be efficient and successful, strong links needs to be established between research institutions with a well-established expertise in PEF technology (4 partners), manufactures of PEF generator (1 SME partner) and food companies (5 SMEs partners) that represent the final users of the technology.

Lebanese agricultural products have the potential to compete well in regional and international markets; however many products require improvements in terms of quality and specifications to meet customer demand, leveraging the country’s significant assets and abundant talented human resources. In addition, the country is affected by the regional crisis, particularly in rural areas. The Lebanon Industry Value Chain Development (LIVCD) project is a five-year, $41.7 million U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) program aimed at improving Lebanon’s economic stability and providing income-generating opportunities for small business while creating jobs for the rural population, in particular women and youth. LIVCD aims to improve the competitiveness and value of products and services in both local and export markets by increasing the quality, quantity, and consistency of Lebanese products and companies. Sample Activities Increase rural incomes, support rural employment, and expand export sales in processed foods, rural tourism, floriculture, grapes, olive oil, apples, pears, avocados, cherries, and a basket of rural agricultural products including thyme, pine nuts, honey, and free range eggs. Build linkages between farmers, producers, input suppliers, processors, service providers, traders, transporters, retailers, packers, distributors, exporters, and ending with consumers. Strengthen coalition of local actors to ensure that economic benefits from rural tourism remain in those communities. Facilitate access to markets and to financing opportunities for rural actors through public-private partnerships and co-investments in order to increase income of the rural population and promote rural wealth creation. Provide technical assistance to disseminate innovative agricultural practices and technologies and build capacities through customized training for micro, small, and medium enterprises, and farmers. Select Results Leveraged $7,621,305 of new private sector investment. Helped 8,402 farmers to apply improved technologies or management practices. Trained 10,370 individuals. Helped 1,160 medium and small enterprises—including—to apply for value chain finance.
