Planned Number Of Participants For The 2Nd Level: 2 Participants From Level 1: 9 Initial Situation The Concentration Camp In Husum-Schwesing Was Established On September 26, 1944. The Area Is Located A Few Kilometers Northeast Of Husum In The Nordfriesland District Between The Main Husum-Flensburg Road (Today B 200) And The Now Defunct Railway Line To Flensburg. 2,500 People From 14 Countries Were Deported To Husum-Schwesing To Dig The So-Called “Friesenwall” Under The Most Adverse Conditions. When The Fortifications Along The North Sea Coast Proved To Be Militarily Useless, The Concentration Camp Was Closed On December 29, 1944. At Least 300 People Died As A Result Of Hard Physical Labor, Starvation And Torture. In 1985, The Nordfriesland District Was Able To Buy The Eastern Half Of The Former Camp Site And In 1994 Other Parts Of The Site, Where The Remains Of The Foundation And The Fire Hydrant Are Also Located. As Early As November 1987, A Memorial Designed By The Sculptor Ulrich Lindow Was Inaugurated On The Camp Site. Since Then, The Memorial On The Site Of The Former Concentration Camp Has Been A Reminder Of The Crimes That Were Committed At This Location. The Camp Site Has Been A Listed Building Since 1995. In 2017, The “House Of The Present” Was Built, In Which Questions And Approaches To Dealing With The Nazi Past And Today’S Society Can Be Dealt With In Depth And In A Contemporary Way. Further Measures Included The Creation Of An Outdoor Exhibition And The Production Of An Audio Tour. With Its Offerings In The House Of The Present, The Memorial Has Been Playing A Pioneering Role For Schleswig-Holstein Since 2017. However, The Building Only Offers Space For 15 People, Which Is Far Too Little And Does Not Meet The Increasing Demand. In Order To Be Able To Welcome A Larger Audience To Events And To Be Able To Implement Multi-Day Formats On Site, An Additional Multifunctional Training And Event Room, Sanitary Facilities And A Kitchen Are Required.
