Project Notice

PNR 46575
Project Name Bolstering Jordan’s Water Sector Governance.
Project Detail The Water Governance Activity in Jordan works alongside Jordans Ministry of Water and Irrigation to promote sustainable water governance, and increase water security in the country. Jordan is one of the most water-scarce countries in the world. Experts predict the country will experience extreme water poverty by 2025 unless the water sector prioritizes governance strengthening, improved financial performance, and sustainable management of water supplies. USAID/Jordan’s Water Governance Activity (WGA) works with Jordan’s Ministry of Water and Irrigation to promote sustainable water sector management and governance by strengthening reform efforts, policy development and implementation, and capacity building for sector counterparts. WGA improves the government’s oversight of water management through an actionable water strategy and policies that focus on measurable impacts and accountability. In addition, WGA coordinates with water utility companies to improve service delivery and financial performance. Throughout all this work, WGA will focus on reducing network losses, improving cost recovery, and strengthening management systems. WGA will also support the government and utility companies in their efforts to raise public trust in the water sector and build public support for water conservation and sector reform. By improving the governance and management of the water sector, water services, and citizen and private sector participation in water management and conservation, WGA strives to increase Jordan’s water security and ensure all citizens have better, more equitable access to water resources. Project Goals Strengthen the government’s capacity to measure and implement policy reform initiatives within the water sector Resolve water sector policy issues through an updated national water sector strategy and strengthened water governance policies Improve water entities’ performance by reducing losses, increasing conveyance efficiencies, and improving utility cost recovery Build the capacity of the Ministry of Water and Irrigation and water utility companies in communications and behavior change approaches while increasing the agency and leadership of women, youth, and the private sector
