Work Detail German energy company RWE has announced it will shut down a 300-megawatt unit at the Neurath lignite-fired power plant near Dusseldorf on April 1 to cut emissions. The move comes within the framework of the statutory decommissioning schedule. Germany is currently planning to phase out coal by 2038. The premier of the western state of North Rhine Westphalia, where the plant is located, recently vowed that the state is even prepared to halt the mining of lignite, also known as brown coal, some eight years ahead of schedule, in 2030. Despite the scheduled shutdown, RWE said it will maintain the unit for a short time to resolve any energy supply shortages that may arise. In light of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and the threat of a Russian gas embargo, several European countries including Germany have sounded alarm bells over potential energy supply shortages. Frank Weigand, CEO of RWE Power, said: "We have promised politicians that, in an emergency, power plants will be connected to the grid again, if technically possible. The decision as to whether and to what extent these systems should be available is made solely by politicians." "The Ministry of Economics is currently examining what measures are needed for the coming winter to ensure security of supply," he added. Since the end of 2020, RWE has already shutdown six power plant blocks with a combined output of around 1,800 MW. Along with other scheduled shutdowns, around 40% of the original lignite capacity in Germanys western Rheinland region will have gone off the grid with around 4,000 MW of output by the end of this year. ©2022 dpa GmbH.
