Amprion receives planning approval decisions at sea and on land

Amprion Offshore GmbH has obtained planning approval for significant portions of the DolWin4 and BorWin4 land routes, as well as for BorWin4 in the exclusive economic zone. Civil engineering work on land will commence soon. Amprion is linking wind farms in North Sea Area 6 to the BorWin4 offshore grid connection system, overseen by the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH). The company must undergo a multi-stage approval process from the BSH and adhere to additional provisions outlined in the planning approval decisions during implementation. Construction is set to start on the land route, with approval received for sections from coast to Emden and Wietmarschen to Lingen. Amprion aims to begin civil engineering work in the first half of 2024. BorWin4, initially planned for operation in 2029, is now slated to be operational a year earlier, reflecting Amprions accelerated implementation plans announced in 2022. DolWin4 and BorWin4 are expected to be operational by 2028, replacing lost generation capacity from the Emsland nuclear power plant with 1.8 gigawatts of offshore wind energy. Germany

SBM Offshore secures $250m FPSO construction loan

Dutch floater expert SBM Offshore has secured a $250m term loan facility for floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel construction financing. SBM said that the facility will be drawn in full in the coming days. The tenor of the bridge loan is twelve months with an extension option for another six months. Repayment is expected from the first drawdown of the construction financing of the FPSO Jaguar set to work on ExxonMobil’s Whiptail development in Guyana’s prolific Stabroek block. Whiptail is the sixth development within the block. The company was recently given the go-ahead to start construction of the Jaguar which it will operate for 10 years upon construction on behalf of ExxonMobil. The FPSO’s will produce 250,000 barrels of oil per day, will have an associated gas treatment capacity of 540m cfpd, and a water injection capacity of 300,000 barrels per day. It will be spread-moored in a water depth of about 1,630 meters and will be able to store around 2m barrels of crude oil. Netherlands The

Transocean picks up extensions for drillship pair

Offshore drilling giant Transocean has secured more work for its drillships in the US Gulf of Mexico and Angola. The New York-listed contractor revealed in its latest fleet status report that an undisclosed client in the US Gulf had extended the contract for the Deepwater Invictus into July this year. The 2014-built drillship was fixed to the same client for 40 days in January at $440,000 per day. Dayrates for the most recent extension were not disclosed. The rig has another three-year campaign lined up in Mexico, starting in November 2025 at $480,000 per day. Meanwhile, in Angola, TotalEnergies called its option on the drillship Deepwater Skyros to keep the rig until December 2025 at $400,000 per day. The 2013-built rig is currently fixed at $310,000 per day until February 2025, when the first extension at an improved dayrate should kick in. Swiss-based Transocean owns, has stakes in or operates 28 ultra-deepwater drillships and eight harsh environment semisubs that have generated a backlog of approximately $8.9bn. One more drillship is under construction and booked by Petrobras. Angola

DEME wins cable installation work for two Dutch offshore grid systems

Belgian marine contractor DEME has been awarded two contracts by cable solutions provider Prysmian for the engineering and installation works on two offshore grid systems in the Netherlands. The contract for the work on the IJmuiden Ver Alpha and Nederwiek 1 offshore grid systems is the most extensive cabling award in DEME’s history. Prysmian won the tender for this project in March 2023. IJmuiden Ver Alpha and Nederwiek 1 are offshore grid connection systems operated by TenneT. The two grid connection systems will connect its namesake offshore wind areas – Ijmuiden Ver and Nederwiek – in the Dutch North Sea to the province of Zeeland in the southwestern part of the Netherlands. The first connection will be operational in 2029, and the second in 2030. Each wind energy area consists of three wind farms with a capacity of 2GW each. This means that a total of 6GW of green energy will be generated per wind energy area. To bring wind energy to land, three 2GW connections are needed per area. From the first area, IJmuiden Ver Alpha, Beta, and Gamma will connect the wind farms to land while the second will utilise the Nederwiek 1, 2, and 3 connections. The contracts awarded to DEME include cable installation, landfall and rock placement, dredging, and marine infrastructure works. This includes the engineering and the installation works of two 12-km long 525 kV HVDC cable systems within the Veerse Meer lake and 126 km of 525 kV HVDC cable system offshore. DEME will also carry out preparation and supporting works for IJmuiden Ver Alpha, comprising route preparation, surveys, landfalls and rock placement, as well as pre-sweeping and rock placement works for the Nederwiek 1 project. Furthermore, the project will encompass the beach works and cofferdam structures at the cable landing locations. The Belgian firm will deploy a variety of vessels from its fleet, including cable installation vessels, hopper dredgers, and a fallpipe vessel. The work is scheduled to begin in stages from 2025. According to DEME, the two contracts combined qualify as a large contract, representing a value of more than €300m (over $320m). Belgium
