Estonian Company Enefit Green to build 8 wind farms in Poland.

After market close yesterday, 11 April 2024, Enefit Green’s subsidiary Enefit Green sp. z o.o. signed a Development Service Agreement with a Polish development company - RES Global Investment sp. z o.o. to acquire 100% of development rights in multiple early-stage onshore wind projects in Poland. The signed agreement covers 8 separate early-stage onshore wind projects with targeted total installed capacity of up to 360 MW. The start of construction of these projects is estimated to be no sooner than 2028. According to current expectations the completed projects will operate either under merchant market conditions or a power purchase arrangement to be entered into at the time of investment decision. Total estimated investments amount to ca €80m, which includes the project acquisition cost and other development costs needed to achieve “ready to build” status for all projects in the scope. The timing and size of the payments depend on achievement of certain development milestones established in the executed agreement and the relevant grid requirements. Enefit Green is one of the leading renewable energy producers in the Baltic Sea area. The Company operates wind farms in Estonia and Lithuania, waste-to-energy CHP plant in Estonia, solar farms in Estonia and Poland and a hydroelectric plant in Estonia. In addition, the Company is developing several wind and solar farms in the mentioned countries, Latvia and Finland. As of the end of 2023, the Company had a total installed electricity production capacity of 515 MW and a total installed heat production capacity of 50 MW. During 2023, the Company produced 1,343 GWh of electricity, 604 GWh of heat energy and 156 thousand tonnes of wood pellets. In the end of 2023, Enefit Green exited the biomass based CHP and pellet production businesses. Estonia

Pakistan, Chinese firm sign MoU of $200m to convert thermal plant into solar power

Pakistan has signed a two hundred million MOU with a Chinese firm to convert a thermal plant to solar power. The project will upgrade an existing thermal power plant to a 300 MW solar power plant through the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC). The project will generate 400 million units of electricity per year at a significantly lower cost, reducing the cost from forty five rupees to fourteen rupees per unit. The project will eliminate the need for Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO). It is estimated to save forty four million dollars annually due to reduction in import bills, offering attractive returns to stakeholders. Source: Radio Pakistan Pakistan

Mental health champion named construction’s Rising Star 2024

A passion for supporting colleagues with their mental well-being helped Kier Construction’s design manager Jessica Haskett scoop the Chartered Institute of Building’s coveted Rising Star award. She was honoured at the Chartered Institute of Building’s (CIOB) glittering CIOB Awards ceremony in London on 9 April at the Hilton Metropole hotel. She was recognised for her work supporting the construction of a children’s mental health facility in Dorset where she championed the use of sustainable materials and led net-zero carbon workshops. But outside of her day-to-day role as a design manager, Jessica can often be found supporting both her colleagues and members of the supply chain with their mental health. Statistics from mental health charity Mates in Mind highlight the overwhelming anxiety construction workers face, with nearly a third of workers revealing they face elevated levels of anxiousness every day. Jessica said: “Thank you to the CIOB for choosing me as the winner of the Rising Star award, it is my greatest professional achievement to date – especially as it came so early in my career – and it is a great reminder that belief, collaboration and innovation all go hand in hand. “With the support of my colleagues and my network I have been able to encourage an environment of empathy and understanding where everyone feels supported, whether that’s problem solving on a project or support with their mental health.” David Rowsell, managing director of Kier Construction London, added: “We are so proud of Jessica for winning the CIOB Rising Star Award. She is an asset to Kier, not only in her role as a design manager but also for her work in tackling mental health, an issue that remains a priority in construction.” She was described by her colleagues as an innovative and professional team leader who is determined to promote sustainability in the construction sector. In 2020, she led a student team to the finals of the Solar Decathlon Middle East competition, a contest where competitors must design and build high-performance, low-carbon buildings. Caroline Gumble, CEO at CIOB, added: “Firstly, I would like to say a huge congratulations to Jessica for winning the Rising Star award. I do not doubt that she is one to watch for the construction industry and I look forward to seeing her career flourish. United Arab Emirates

Heidelberg awards scoping contract for world’s first carbon-captured cement plant

Heidelberg Materials North America has awarded a front-end engineering design (FEED) contract for a carbon-capture system at its cement plant in Edmonton, Canada to contractor Kiewit and MHI-LCSC, part of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI). Heidelberg said it was the latest step in a two-stage competitive procurement process for the system, which it hopes will capture and store a million metric tons of carbon dioxide a year, the annual equivalent of taking 220,000 cars off the road. Its northwest region vice president Joerg Nixdorf said the contract represents “meaningful progress on the path to achieving a net-zero future”. Going ahead with the system depends on finalising Canadian federal and provincial funding agreements. Heidelberg said it expects to make a final investment decision on the carbon-capture system this year. If it goes ahead, the Edmonton plant would to be the world’s first full-scale carbon-capture application in the cement sector, Heidelberg said. The Canadian government signed a memorandum of understanding supporting the estimated C$1.4bn system last April. The FEED study will be based on MHI’s proprietary “Advanced KM CDR Process”, developed jointly with Kansai Electric Power, which uses the KS-21 solvent. Canada
