Development consent granted for Sheringham Shoal and Dudgeon Extension Projects in the UK

Eversource Energy has announced the finalisation of definitive documents for its previously announced agreement to sell its 50 percent ownership stake in the 924MW Sunrise Wind project to Ørsted. Despite the sale, Eversource will continue its involvement through a separate construction management agreement, leading the onshore construction of the Sunrise Wind project. In this capacity, Eversource will serve as a service provider to Ørsted, without retaining any ongoing ownership interest or financial obligations associated with project costs. The transaction is expected to close later this year, subject to certain conditions, including the execution of a contract with NYSERDA and customary regulatory approvals. United States

BASF acquires stake in Nordlicht offshore wind farms from Vattenfall

Vattenfall and BASF have agreed to the sale of 49% of Vattenfalls Nordlicht 1 and 2 wind farms to BASF. Nordlicht marks Vattenfalls second offshore wind project involving BASF as a partner. In 2021, BASF acquired nearly half of the shares in the Hollandse Kust Zuid offshore wind farm in the Dutch North Sea. The Nordlicht project, situated in the German North Sea, is being developed without state subsidies and will have a total installed capacity of 1.6GW. Vattenfall is tasked with the development and construction of the Nordlicht sites and plans to utilise its share of future electricity generation to serve customers in Germany. BASF, on the other hand, intends to use its share to power its chemical production sites in Europe, particularly in Ludwigshafen, Germany. The Nordlicht wind farm area lies 85 kilometres north of the island of Borkum in the German North Sea and comprises two separate sites: Nordlicht 1 with a capacity of around 980MW and Nordlicht 2 with around 630MW. Pending the final investment decision, anticipated in 2025, construction of Nordlicht 1 and 2 is scheduled to commence in 2026, with full operational status expected by 2028. The financial terms of the transaction have not been disclosed by the parties. Germany

Kent secures Pre-FEED assessment contract for Spiorad na Mara offshore wind project

Kent has been granted a contract by Spiorad na Mara Limited for the pre-front end engineering design (Pre-FEED) assessment of the proposed Spiorad na Mara offshore wind farm. Formerly known as N4, the project is situated approximately 5-13 kilometres off the west coast of the Isle of Lewis and is owned by Northland Power (75.5%) and ESB (24.5%), with Northland leading the development, construction, and operation. The potential capacity of the wind farm is around 900 MW. Kent will conduct an assessment for the Wind Turbine Generator (WTG) foundation concept, selection, and foundation sizing. United Kingdom

Empowering Agriculture: Kerala’s Sustainable Energy Revolution With PM-KUSUM Component-C

In a recent development in Kerala, a significant shift towards sustainable energy is being realized through the implementation of the PM-KUSUM Component-C project. This project is designed to support the solarization of agricultural pump sets, aiming to enhance energy efficiency and reduce financial burdens on farmers. The initiative is being carried out by ANERT (Agency for Non-conventional Energy and Rural Technology), which plans to equip 93,348 pumps across five districts with solar power. This will allow these pumps, which were previously powered by conventional electricity, to operate on solar energy, thus reducing the operational costs for farmers and the subsidy burden on the state. The financial aspect of this project is supported by NABARD’s RIDF (Rural Infrastructure Development Fund), which means that farmers are not required to contribute financially to the installation of solar panels. The repayment of the loans taken for this initiative will be managed through the revenue generated from the power these solar units export back to the state grid. The government of India is backing this move with further plans to solarize additional pumps, potentially bringing the total to one lakh, which demonstrates a commitment to scaling up sustainable agricultural practices in the region. Currently, the Agriculture Department covers the electricity costs of these agricultural pumps at a significantly subsidized rate. With the new system, the department anticipates considerable savings over 25 years, savings which can then be allocated to other developmental projects. Once the loan repayment is completed, the surplus power generated can be an additional source of income for the farmers. One of the unique aspects of this project in Kerala is the integration of residential and agricultural spaces, which is quite common in the state. Many farmers live on the same land where their pumps are located, allowing for easier installation of solar panels either on their rooftops or nearby structures like sheds. However, this has led to some regulatory challenges, as the existing rules require some modifications to accommodate the new setups where solar power generation and consumption occur on the same premises but are recorded under different utility connections. In response, the local power utility and regulatory bodies have been w India
