Today up to a third of all food produced—and almost the 50% of fruits and vegetables (F&V)—perishes before being used with a consequent economic and environmental cost of $1.7 trillion. Somewhere between the 20% and 40% of F&V are lost at postharvest stages, during handling, storage and distribution. Among causes, food spoilage due to fungal pathogens such as molds leads to substantial food waste and an estimated $100 billion of economic losses for producers, retailers and consumers. Traditional control of fungal infection relies on preharvest (field) application of synthetic fungicides, but their use is being progressively banned and efficient natural alternatives are lacking on the market. Moving from this scenario, AgroSustain has identified and patented more than 60 antifungal plant-derived compounds, getting to the formula of a new generation of highly-efficient and cost-effective natural fungicides. Our first product, AgroShelf+, shows an unprecedented fungitoxic efficacy against a wide range of mainly spread fungi, thus preventing postharvest fruit spoilage and extending the F&V shelf-life by a minimum of 7 days. This will allow food retailers and distributors using AgroShelf+ to greatly reduce their food loss costs and improving food quality for consumers. Starting with Switzerland in 2020, AgroSustain plans to expand sales to other EU countries (France, UK and Germany). During this Ph1 project we will optimize the product formulation in order to stress the AgroShelf+ performances targeting specific crops. We will also go through the first round of toxicity tests requested for the certification and regulative approval pathway. A cost-benefit analysis and a deeper market research will also consolidate our pricing strategy and business model. This will pave the way for the pilot test with large retailers in the Phase 2 project.

Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) are a major public health, medical, and societal challenge globally. In the European Union alone, an estimated 57,000 deaths and 1.5 million hospital admissions annually have been attributed to TBI. Hospital admission rate of 287.2 per 100,000 persons per year. To avoid a chronic phase of disorders, early, long-term, continual, targeted and complex neurorehabilitation for patients is highly required. The complex neurorehabilitative approach includes a cognitive rehabilitation from early stages of onset. Smart neurorehabilitation software Eddie is a project based on clinical psychological experience, current state of knowledge in neuroplasticity, big data analysing and prediction model based on machine learning and big data analysis. It is the application aimed at patients from early onset of treatment who need to restore cognitive function and is designed for long term neurorehabilitation. Within phase 1 of SME-Instrument we want to elaborate feasibility study with 4 specific objectives - 1. Technical verification – test a prototype of the smart neurocognitive rehabilitation software in connection to the upcoming technologies, such as haptics and bionics provide a user friendly interface for rehabilitation, on healthy people. Secondly to test the application for patients with traumatic brain injury. 2. Market research - to explore markets in selected European countries – Poland, Germany, Austria and Slovakia. 3. Elaborate the IP strategy 4. Prepare the feasibility study including the business plan for Poland, Germany, Austria and Slovakia.

By presenting a reliable, low-latency and secure industrial wireless protocol, CoreTigo is going to minimise cable use in industrial automation and by this bring mobility, flexibility and scalability to the 4th Industrial Revolution. Wi-MCA stands for Wireless for Mission-Critical Applications. CoreTigo, the proposer, is the initiator and developer of a new communications protocol known as the IO-Link Wireless standard (IEC 61131-9) . There are many potential fields of application that are candidates for adoption and implementation. In some, it will substantially improve the existing wiring system thus leading to substantial cost saving and reduced downtime of manufacturing equipment. In others, by changing the rules of the game, it can open whole new possibilities by enabling trusted and robust wireless communications which were not possible to implement until now in industrial environments. evaGuide is a Security Management Platform for enhanced situation awareness and real-time adaptive evacuation strategies for large venues for sports and entertainment. evaGuide aims to address the needs of the safety of large facility visitors during complex evacuation processes, following normal and abnormal events (crises) towards the creation of an easily deployable system that will be able to timely identify new threats, designate and sustain a Location based Dynamic Evacuation Route (LDER) that improves all corresponding response times under any circumstances. Moreover it will support the complete lifecycle of evacuation planning, simulating complex scenarios, training of safety personnel and assessment of the performed actions. The results of the market research that has been performed among the 300 member stadia of ESSMA (the European Stadium & Safety Management Association) revealed that there is a clear need for a project like evaGuide that addresses all the phases of the evacuation lifecycle and offers superior situational awareness, while at the same time existing and emerging regulations from FIFA/UEFA need to be met. The business sustainability/exploitation potential has been validated in the Feasibility Study, which is an integral part of this proposal. The project outcome will be a fully functional evaGuide platform demonstrator delivered for operational use to one stadium (one of the ESSMA member stadia, selected on M2). The demonstrator will perform according to the adapted requirements defined by ESSMA and the stakeholders involved (finalized on M10), will be fully integrated (by M20) and tested (M21), ready to be commercially exploited by the joint commercialization entity defined during the last months of the project (M24).

Majority of piston engine powered General Aviation aircraft are running on aviation gasoline (Avgas) grades that are more expensive than Ethanol containing gasoline grades used by automobiles. In addition, most of the piston aero engines are still burning lead containing Avgas (100LL). No certified solution is available to allow operation of aircraft engines with Ethanol containing, EN 228 Standard fuel grade. Consequently, the project aims to result in certified modifications of the common piston aero engines and small aircraft that allow use of Ethanol containing gasoline. It will reduce fuel cost (30-40%) for small aircraft, while it will not require replacement of old engines. Yet, it will involve replacement of some parts and changes to operational procedures leading to an economical solution. The project will also allow eliminating lead containing Avgas and introducing renewable energy using Ethanol. This will reduce greenhouse gas emission, combating climate change and contributing to environmental protection. Introduction of Ethanol containing gasoline for aviation triggers safety risks that should be mitigated to reach an acceptable level of safety to gain certification from the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in the USA. Certification may be achieved if it is demonstrated that the modifications comply with the airworthiness requirements and will not lead to unsafe condition. Technical feasibility will be verified through the analysis of the safety risks as well as the determination of the applicable airworthiness requirements and means of compliances, by means of the certification programmes accepted by EASA. Commercial feasibility will be shown through market research and analysis. The feasibility study will pave the way to the modifications and completion of compliance demonstrations as well as certification, to allow safe operation with Ethanol containing gasoline.

While in the developed regions availability of electricity power has paved the way of sustainable development, it is still not available to ca. 18% of the world population, living in rural areas in developing countries and refugee camps worldwide. No access to power indicates exhausting effort for covering basic needs, which impedes sustainable social and economic development. Nearly 700 million people worldwide have mobile phone connections but no access to the electricity. In India, people belong to off-grid communities need to travel approximately 15 km to get their mobile phone charged. We have developed a unique solar power based Hub system and remote payment control mechanism by which electronic devices can be charged under the control of a central server to ensure accountability and transparency. This will enable EU companies to enter in €8 to 10 billion untouched market by delivering essential internet-based services (e.g., e-health, e-education, e-governance etc). BuffaloGrid supplies Hubs free of cost to local agents. This will stimulate local enterprise, encourage entrepreneurship and boost economic development. During SMEi Phase – 1 feasibility study, we have identified several technical improvements that are mainly focused on further development of the Hub, PCB and server designs. For commercial feasibility of the project, we have successfully performed market research, environmental impact assessment, partnership establishment, risk analysis and competitor analysis. During this project, we aim to reach from TRL7 to TRL9 and will make the product ready for mass scale deployment. We will focus on technical design improvement of the Hub for cost reduction (60%) and will finalise optimised system for mass scale production. We will also validate Hub functionality and server operations and will trial online services of EU SMEs in the field. Our commercialization plan is to deploy minimum 50,000 hubs across India, Sub-Sahara Africa and Refugee camps by 2021.

Most people who develop ischemic HF have (or had) an ischemic heart condition first (e.g. myocardial infarction, MI). Restoring damaged heart muscle tissue therefore represents a fundamental mechanistic strategy to treat HF. Cardiac regeneration after ischemic damage can be achieved by stimulating the proliferation of already existing (endogenous) cardiomyocytes rather than having to rely on the implantation of exogenous cells (i.e. stem cell therapy). Compelling evidence supports that expanding the endogenous cardiomyocyte proliferation capacity by gene therapy appears to represent a promising approach to achieve endogenous cardiac regeneration. Species of non-coding RNA molecules, microRNAs, have been demonstrated to stimulate cardiomyocyte proliferation and the recognition of microRNAs as potential regenerative targets marks a major step towards fundamentally new therapeutic concepts that SUMMA addresses in ischemic heart disease. In the context of the ERC-Starting Grant project CALMIRS, we identified the miR-106b~25 cluster with high potential as new target for therapy to stimulate regeneration of the heart by promoting cardiomyocyte proliferation. Within SUMMA, we aim to advance these valuable research results on microRNA cardiac gene therapy in mice towards commercial proof-of-concept. During this project, proof-of-concept efficacy studies in a large animal (e.g. porcine) model of cardiac ischemia will be performed, while simultaneously market research, IP strategy development and business development activities take place to maximize the value of the project’s results. Different business models will be studied in terms of market research, IP strategy and business development to eventually consolidate a commercial strategy and business case for presenting our business proposition to strategic partners or venture capitalists.

Daan Tech has developed Bob, world’s smallest (35*45*40cm), lightest (9kg) & fastest (20mins) plastic injection mould dishwasher; first autonomous 2 place settings countertop, which cleans & dries daily dishes, with low water (3L) & energy (0.25kWh) consumptions thanks to its ultrasonic & steam cleaning combination. New generation biodegradable gel cartridge dispenser (patentable) will also be developed by Daan Tech; winner of French PEPITE R&D challenge. Worldwide, white appliances such as dishwashers are primarily designed for family households, hence completely neglecting the ever-growing single person or couples (in EU-28, 2/3 of all households were composed of one or two persons in 2016: most common type was composed of a single person with 33.1% & recorded the highest increase since 2006 (3.4 percentage points); two persons corresponded to 31.7% (0.8 pp increase since 2006 ) living in small apartments with small kitchens. Hence, Bob is an ideal solution, relying on a patent-pending technology (FR1870069), already received 400k€ from the French government. Extra funding is required to launch the product at the European scale (increasing commercial attractiveness), hence, more attractive for private investors. SME Phase 1 & 50k€ lump sum funding will considerably help explore & assess the technical feasibility, defining manufacturing process, complete the market research & business feasibility of Bob innovative dishwasher, which is fully aligned with Daan Tech business strategy, helping both internal growth & targeted transnational business opportunities. Daan Tech aim is to release the final prototype by the end of 2018, ready for manufacturing & reach TRL8. Endurance tests are required on pre-series to reduce technological risks & bring to TRL9. The positive outcome of SME phase 1 will allow applying for an additional funding in SME phase 2 in view of commercialisation.

Soft Robotics is an emerging technology that bridges the gap between humans and potentially harmful robots by developing devices, which are intrinsically safe to interact with. Former studies on Soft Pneumatic actuators (SPAs) show that they can be used for fine manipulation of fragile environments including interaction with living beings for rehabilitation purposes or as wearable devices for humans. The modeling and control challenges involving early designs of SPAs remain unanswered and hinder the application spectrum of such potentially disruptive innovation. Given the flexibility and scalability of SPAs, they can be also used as haptic devices in distributed surfaces. The development of these technologies has been limited to testbench prototypes and their integration into a single platform for sensing and actuating at different scales has not been successfully implemented yet. To address this need, we propose the design and control of Soft fluidic actuated interfaces for Human-Machine interaction for rehabilitation devices. The development of scalable interfaces require a novel approach of actuation and sensing co-design for variable impedance devices in contact with humans. Besides representing a step forward in the applicability of the Soft Robotics concept, the devices can also provide an intrinsically safe solution for rehabilitative robotics to address the challenge of physical interaction. Through this project, the ER will reach a level of maturity on technological aspects in this rapidly growing research field. The proprietary microfluidic control developments at Elvesys will be feeding directly the advancement of this research. Also, the ER will benefit from entrepreneurship skills specific to SME environments, including market research, product valorization and finance management. Following this new experience, the ER will reach the level of autonomy and leadership to envision managing a research team in the industrial level.
