France to tender 240 MW of solar capacity along highways

The French authorities plan to launch a series of tenders to deploy PV systems along highways, starting this month.Frances Regional Highways Division (DIR) plans to launch a series of tenders to deploy 240 MW of solar capacity along the countrys highway network this month. The DIR, the Cerema mobility research center, and the French Treasury have already identified 140 car parking areas with a total surface of 38.7 hectares. This includes around 100 interchanges for 162.4 hectares – a figure likely to change because the selection process is not yet complete. “In total, the estimated power of this PV potential is 240 MW, representing more than 7.5% of projects connected to the French electricity network in 2023,” said Kévin Guichard, project director of Fin Infra, a government-run agency that advises public entities on their investment projects. These projects will be grouped by cluster, depending on geographic areas and/or economic balance, with a single developer or consortium to be selected per cluster. The selection of project clusters is still in progress and will lead to the launch of the first tenders from the end of April 2024. The selection will take place in two stages. The first phase will focus on the selection of three to five candidates based on analysis of their financial and technical means. They will then have the opportunity to apply for the final phase of the tender, which will mainly focus on competitive bidding for the variable part, based on the turnover generated by the sale of electricity proposed by the candidate. The tenders will award a public domain occupation agreement (CODP) for 33 years. During that period, the winning company will pay the public owner a fee consisting of a fixed portion and a variable part, depending on the turnover generated by the sale of electricity. At the end of the selection, it will have three years to carry out development studies and finalize commissioning. France

Dracula Technologies, STMicroelectronics unveil photovoltaic illuminometer

France’s indoor organic PV specialist Dracula Technologies and Swiss-headquartered semiconductor manufacturer STMicroelectronics demonstrated a battery-free illuminometer at the Embedded World trade fair in Germany last week. At Embedded World, a trade fair held in Germany last week, a prototype of an illuminometer powered by an organic PV (OPV) module replacing the traditional coin battery was on display. It is a result of collaboration between France’s Dracula Technologies, an OPV module manufacturer, and STMicroelectronics, a Swiss-headquartered semiconductor company with production sites in Italy and France. An illuminometer is an instrument for measuring light intensity and brightness, also known as a lux meter. The two companies said in a statement that the energy harvesting performance of the OPV module is designed to excel in low-light, sub-500 lux conditions and matches well with a new low-power microcontroller unit, named STM32U0. The pairing enables battery-free or autonomous sensors and connected devices serving industrial, medical, smart metering and retail markets, as well as consumer health and wellness applications. “Our Layer technology allows customers of both companies to power and operate autonomously a complete device using the latest STM32U0 microcontroller unit,” Jerome Vernet, Dracula Technologies vice president of sales, told pv magazine. Commenting on the collaboration, Thierry Bousquet, marketing manager for the STM32 ultra-low power product line at STMicroelectronics, said in a statement: “One of the STM32U0 demos that garnered a lot of attention is an illuminometer built using Dracula Technologies’ OPV module. It runs on a small photovoltaic panel receiving only 5 lux instead of the traditional coin battery.” To give an idea of the Dracula Technologies technology, an evaluation board available for purchase has a functional area of 47 mm x 57 mm weighing 1.66 g. At 1,000 lux, the current is 322 mA and the power output is 750 mW at 2.85 V. Founded in 2011, Dracula has announced factory plans with a capacity to produce up to 150 million cm² of its printed OPV products annually. More recently, it announced a new product that integrates its PV modules with a supercapacitor in a single thin film-based component, designed to store energy for periods without ambient light and replace conventional Switzerland

Spanish installer tests vertical rooftop PV array based on conventional panels

Sud Renovables has installed a pilot vertical rooftop PV system on one of its facilities in Barcelona, Spain. The array features two 500 W bifacial modules from US-based SunPower and two microinverters from Enphase Energy. Spanish rooftop PV installer SUD Renovables has deployed vertical bifacial solar panels on the rooftop of its warehouse in Avinyó, Barcelona, Spain. The system features two 500 W P6 panels from US-based SunPower and two IQ8P microinverters from Enphase Energy. “The mounting structures have been designed according to the wind characteristics of the area, with stainless steel material,” Sud Renovables Managing Partner Manel Romero told pv magazine. The company deployed one of the panels with its front side face facing east, and the other facing west. Each one works independently, with maximum power point tracking (MPPT). “With this configuration, we will experimentally see the behavior of the panel and the generation curve, which will be double if we consider the morning and afternoon peak, and the real value of specific production of the system,” explained Romero. Sud Renovables acknowledged that it does not seem to make much sense to put vertical panels on a rooftop in low latitudes, but it plans to test them to validate their performance. It said it will consider vertical architectures in projects for which this configuration is appropriate, such as agrivoltaic systems, arrays on acoustic barriers along highways, fencing, or building facades. “In Spain, it would make a lot of sense to install bifacial panels vertically on the ground and in urban environments with vertical applications,” said Romero. He said that in these systems, the panel should be installed along the frame, without any objects casting shadows on the back, including metal profiles, wiring trays, microinverters, or optimizers. However, the vertical placement of panels can expose modules to wind, which is why it is important that they are installed with the appropriate structures. This guarantees that the panels can withstand wind loads, so micro-ruptures of cells do not cause hotspots. Turkish solar module manufacturer launches production in Texas

Elin Energy says it has an agreement with key US distributors and will begin with 1 GW of annual PV module production, with plans to increase to 2 GW within 18 months.Elin Energy, a Turkish PV module manufacturer, is now producing solar modules in Texas. The company, founded in 1981, has long supplied solar modules to the European solar market. Due to the passage of the US Inflation Reduction Act, it now plans to do the same in the US market. Under the name Sirius PV USA, the company began production in March at a new module factory in Waller County, near Houston, Texas. It is leasing the facility, which was previously used as a distribution center. The company said it has an agreement with key US distributors and will begin with 1 GW of annual production, with plans to increase to 2 GW within 18 months. Sirius PV USA currently employs more than 100 associates in Texas, and reportedly plans to scale up to 500 associates as it increases production. Its PERC modules are bifacial and range from 410 W to 580 W, catering to residential, commercial and utility-scale markets. In Turkey Elin Energy’s main products are 580 W TOPCon (bifacial, silver-framed) modules, but it also makes other types of modules, including glass-to-glass panels. The company said that its combined manufacturing capacity in Turkey, across three factories, is 3.5 GW per year. He noted that the US market offers significant opportunities for the company to establish itself as a global player alongside its Chinese-origin competitors. Elin Energy joins a raft of other solar module makers who have set up production in Texas, or plan to do so, including Trina Solar, Canadian Solar and SEG Solar.
